While many ultrasound quality control systems use phantoms to test the efficacy of their transducers, phantoms are simply not enough. Dead elements and elements with weak sensitivity obscure the signals sent and received by the transducer. However, the elements' impact on the image is not always as obvious as a dropout.

Just two dead elements in the center of the array, as seen on the FirstCall report below, shows no impact on the scan of a phantom.
